When was the last time you sent or received a postcard?

by KatieP

It’s easy to keep in contact with anyone, anywhere in the world nowadays. Email, Skype and Facebook all provide a free easy to use service and even texts and calls can cost less than you think in today’s society. Staying in touch with loved ones and friends has never been so easy or cheap. So why during my past four months spent living abroad, have I sent over 60 postcards from Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and different parts of Germany?

When you look at it like that it perhaps seems a little silly and maybe quite expensive with each postcard varying in price between 30 cents and one euro and with a further cost of stamps at 70-80 cents each, it can of course soon add up. I have cheated a little though and put a few postcards together in envelopes. For me though, it’s completely worth it!
I absolutely love receiving post from people especially postcards as I think they’re a nice way to show the people you care about the sights you’ve seen and also let them know you’re thinking about them during your travels. Since I sent my first postcard home in July it has become an obsessive routine now that I will send one from each new place I visit and I only realised today how many that has actually added up to. I also still have a further ten months abroad so imagine how many more are going to be sent!

Since I have started sending these postcards, I have received a few from people that I maybe would not have received before, so perhaps it has triggered some kind of feeling or thoughts within people? I’m not too sure. I will be carrying on with my efforts though.

Every time I send postcards home I receive a little message from my parents and grandparents thanking me and commenting on my travels. Even today my mum messaged me telling me she thinks they are nice to receive so she can see where I have been and what I have been up to. This makes me feel that despite the cost and the effort I go through to find and send the postcards, they are always appreciated.

How about you though, when was the last time you sent one? Have you ever sent one? Or do you just think I’m crazy?
